5 Centimeters Per Second (Anime)

Remember a time before cell phones could be found in every pocket? Or when even accessing the world wide web was something only readily available in a library? Back then letters still filled up postboxes and moments just felt so much more precious captured on Polaroid film. Now life seems to move at the speed of light. Our memories are captured and shared with the world on social media platforms. And love, which is already capricious, can feel like it is moving at terminal velocity.
5 Centimeters per Second, The Graphic Novel.

It must really be a lonelier journey than anyone could imagine. Cutting through absolute darkness, encountering nothing but the occasional hydrogen atom. Flying blindly into the abyss, believing therein lie the answers to the mysteries of the universe. And us?..To that end,how far should we go?And how far can we go?
-Takaki Tohno

I also came to the realization that we would not be able to stay together. The overwhelming weight of our lives to come and the uncertainty of time come over us
-Takaki Tohno

Desperately, they just want to reach the dark sky with their hands,
Launching a giant mass like that
Just watching something that lies so far away.
i understand why Tohno-kun looks different from the other people.
at the same time i understand that he never looks at me.
- Sumita Kanae

“In that moment, the dwelling place of eternity, hearts and souls became clear to me. It was as if I understood everything that had happened in my life these last thirteen years, and…the time which was to come. I became unbearably…sad. Akari’s warmth, her spirit, how should I treat them? Where can I bring them? That was something I did not know. That we could not be together forever after this was a fact I clearly grasped. The vast lives we had ahead of us, the boundless amount of time which laid unavoidably stretched out in front of us.”
 - Tohno Takaki

A tribute to the movie.
5 Centimeters per Second, the Sakura fall.

We walked forward,
But not in the same direction.
We started together,
But we left each other,
At 5 centimeters per second.

The wind continues to take us,
To different places,
New friends, and new lives,
Our hearts and our minds,
Still back at the top of the tree.

We were young at the time,
But each second crawls forward,
Taking us further,
Hurting us,
At 5 centimeters per second.

We crossed each other once more,
At the crossroads of destiny,
The wind came and made me turn around.
I looked back to see you again,
But you were gone, moving,
Towards your own happiness.

I tried going back to the Sakura tree.
The place where we first met, to find you.
Yet all that remained were the branches,
you were gone. You fell towards your own path.
I had not, but now I had to move on,
even if I go at 5 centimeters per second.

I got this poem from this site.
